(Maui) Huelo, orange straightline handstamp (205, 1RRRR) ties 1882, 5¢ ultramarine, also cancelled by target cancel, on cover to Honolulu, Siskiyou County, Cal., reverse with Honolulu H.I. 5 Mar 1886" cds (MH 234.62), red San Francisco Pd. All (4.17) transit and partial light blue arrival cds; faults including light cover toning, back and front separated, Fine.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED STRIKES OF THE STRIKING ORANGE "HUELO" STRAIGHTLINE POSTMARK, THIS BEING THE ONLY ON COVER EXAMPLE.

Huelo, Hana District, meaning "tail" was a village and steamer landing on the North Coast of East Maui. The post office is known to have operated 1884-1900 with Postmasters: W. Turner (1884-1892), J. R. Smythe (1892-1894), A. H. Crook (1895) and M. Mattson (1895-1900). Stamp sales in 1884-1885 were about $72 annually and the postmaster was allotted an annual salary of $25. Stamp sales were unrecorded in 1898, but the postmaster was paid a salary of $5.
