Plantation Postmarks

Lot 188

(Plantation) Hoaeae, purple straight line handstamp (Davey 604) tying 1894, 2¢ brown on cover to Honolulu, reverse with "Honolulu, H.I., Jun 21, 1894" receiving duplex postmark, Very Fine.
Scott No. 75    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

AN EXTREMELY RARE ON COVER USAGE OF THE HOAEAE STRAIGHT LINE POSTMARK.

This name is given to a land section in the vicinity of Ewa, above Pearl Lagoon near where Waipahu was situated. It is shown on an 1881 government map. This land became part of the Oahu Sugar Co. when it was formed in 1897. This mark is noted as a cancel on a postal card originating at Waipahu in June of 1897 (similarly dated as this cover). The Waipahu postmark use began in July of 1897 so it is possible this mark was a postmark. No post office by this name was ever listed.

Realized: $375
