Lot 220

Late Letter Mail., clear strike of purple circular handstamp (759, 1RRR) on mourning cover to the H.M. Flagship "Swiftsure" in Esquimalt, British Columbia, franked with 1882, 15¢ red brown tied by cork handstamp, matching "Honolulu, H.I., Oct 1" cds alongside, appropriate backstamps including 1884 Canadian transit; cover tear at left of stamp extending into postmark, otherwise Very Fine, ex-Honolulu Advertiser; with 2015 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 41    Estimate $1,000 - 1,500.

A RARE AND LATEST KNOWN USAGE OF THE CIRCULAR LATE LETTER MAIL HANDSTAMP ON COVER TO BRITISH COLUMBIA.

This mark reflects payment of an extra fee for processing a late letter. Starting in mid-1882, letters brought to the Honolulu Post Office after the posted closing time for a mail shipment were charged an additional 5¢ fee to have their letters included in the mail. The fee was charged more to discourage the practice of bringing in late letters than for revenue.

Realized: $3,250
