1869 (Jul. 23) Royal Invitation, printed invitation on 8"x5" Royal Arms, Three Ring Border stationery (Medcalf #11) by command of the King in honor of His Royal Highness, the Duke of Edinburgh at Iolani Palace, to A.S. Cleghorn, Very Fine, Medcalf $1,500.

His Royal Highness The Prince Alfred, the Duke of Edinburgh (1844-1900) while in command of the "Galatea" began an around the world voyage starting from Plymouth on 24 January 1867. He made many stops including Australia landing at Glenelg, South Australia on Oct. 31st. Being the first member of the royal family to visit Australia, the Duke was received with great enthusiasm. During his stay of nearly five months he visited Adelaide, Melbourne, Sydney, Brisbane and Tasmania. On 12 March 1868, on his second visit to Sydney an assassination attempt was made but he survived and recovered to continue his voyage. He visited Hawaii in 1869 and spent time with the Hawaiian Royal family where he was presented with leis upon his arrival. A Royal Ball in his honor was held, for which this invitation was presented.
