Hawaii, Sanford Ballard Dole, Autograph Letter Signed "Sanford B. Dole", two-pages on Executive Chamber, Honolulu, H.I. stationery, December 20, 1899, reading "Theo F. Lansing Esq, Minister of Finance, Sir: Your letter of this date resigning the office of Minister of Finance has been received. In accepting the same I desire to express my appreciation of the public spirit which led you to accept an office of great responsibility under circumstances which made the tenure uncertain and with full recognition on your part of such uncertainty. I regret that the official relation between use has terminated so soon an am glad to express to you my enjoyment and appreciation of such association, both on account of your uniform courtesy and the ability and integrity of your personal character which a former term of my office brought conspicuously to my notice. I am, Very sincerely yours, Sanford B. Dole"; slight toning, F.-V.F.

Sanford Ballard Dole (1844-1926) was a lawyer and jurist in the Hawaiian Islands as a Kingdom, Protectorate, Republic and Territory. An enemy of the Hawaiian Royalty and friend of the elite immigrant community, Dole advocated the westernization of Hawaiian government and culture. After the overthrow of the Monarchy, he served as President of Hawaii (1894-1900) until his government secured Hawaii's annexation by the United States. He then served as the first Territorial Governor of Hawaii (1900-1903).
