Scott No. U.S. 26    Estimate $3,000 - 4,000.

A WONDERFUL COVER AND LETTER PROMOTING FREE TRADE AND SOUTHERN RIGHTS FOR THE CONFEDERACY.

This Propaganda design is reportedly one of three known examples and one of the rarest of all Confederate Patriotics. Throughout the war the Confederate government hoped to use international commerce to raise hard money and influence other nations to support the Southern cause. This rare slogan design promotes that effort. More effective, however, was the Federal blockade that isolated the Confederate States and disrupted regular trade routes. A similar cover with U.S. stamps over portion of design realized $5,250 hammer in our April 2009 Confederate sale.

Realized: $2,500
