1836 (Mar. 3) Jamaica Plain Mass. to Halifax N.S., datelined folded letter addressed to Postmaster General John Howe with manuscript "Jamaica Plain, Mass March 3" postmark and matching "free" rating crossed out and updated to "25" cents, endorsed "By way of the Lines", blue "Andrews, N.B." star postmark with manuscript "10 Mar 36" date and "1N3" due rating for 1s3d cy., Very Fine.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Postmasters were entitled to free postage both in the Maritimes as well as the United States until 1844, but the privilege was for post office business only.
