Hawaii, 1853, 5¢ blue, thick white paper, large margins all around, tied by large segmented grid cancel on blue cover to Mrs. Olive L. Osgood at Indianapolis Ind., red "Honolulu * Hawaiian Islands * Oct. 8" cds, light strike of "San Francisco Cal. 1 Nov" cds with matching "Ship" and "12" handstamps, Extremely Fine and choice use, Gregory Census No. 5-3, ex-Golden; with 1968 P.F. certificate.

AN OUTSTANDING EXAMPLE OF THE 1853 5¢ KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE PREPAYING HAWAIIAN POSTAGE ON COVER TO THE UNITED STATES.

This cover was carried on Her British Majesty's Frigate "Amphitrite" that departed Honolulu on Oct. 9th 1853 to San Francisco arriving Oct. 28th. It departed on the "California" on Nov. 1st to Panama arriving Nov. 17th. It was carried by USMSC "Illinois" from Aspinwall Nov. 19th to New York arriving Nov. 28th.

According to the Gregory census, this is the third earliest use of the 5¢ Kamehameha III Issue of 40 total covers. The two earlier covers are dated July 3rd and August 16th.
