Table of Contents

1847 Issue

Lot 59

1847, 5¢ dark brown, three huge margins, clear at bottom, tied by red "6" in circle handstamp, matching red "New-York Aug 24" cds on folded cover to Plattsburgh N.Y., manuscript "Due" and red "5" handstamp to left of stamp; some cover toning, 5¢ small scissors-cut entirely in margin at lower right, Very Fine and scarce cancellation on the 1847 Issue, ex-Caspary, Boker, Mirsky; with 2001 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 1a    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

Plattsburgh is just over 300 miles from New York City, and therefore required 10¢ postage for the over 300 mile rate. The 5¢ stamp was accepted as partial payment and the cover was marked 5¢ due. A very unusual use with the "6" rate handstamp, which was normally used for inbound ship letters.
