New Zealand, 1864, Queen Victoria "Chalon Head", 1d Carmine Vermilion, Perf 12½, Horizontal Pair, Large Star watermark, on 1866 cover from Tauranga to Auckland, tied by mute barred oval cancel with "HEADQUARTERS" removed from center, reverse with "Tauranga, De 11, 1866" origin and Auckland receiver, Very Fine. Scott No. 31.
SG No. 110    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

This rare cancel is noted in NZ handbook volume 7 (page 281) as used from February 1867. This cover is now the earliest recorded use.
