Lot 229

1853 (Aug. 24) Glen Mills, Va. to Unter Urbach, Würtemberg, folded letter with manuscript "Waterloo,Va, Augt. 30/53" postmark and "Paid 34¢" rating, red "N. York U.S. Pkt. 'Paid 8' Sep 10" exchange cds, carried by Ocean Line Hermann from New York Sep. 11th to Bremerhaven arriving Sep. 25th, F.-V.F., ex-Winter.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The Glen Mills post office was closed in July 1851 and moved across the Rappahannack River to Waterloo, Virginia where letter was posted. It was prepaid 34¢, the 1st Bremen Treaty rate to Bremen from Virginia. This rate was reduced to 22¢ nine days before letter posted. New York credited Bremen with 8¢ and sent letter fully paid to destination. Bremen credited 3 silbergroschen to the Thurn & Taxis Post for transit fees to Württemberg. The "Fr.3" marking, although in black ink, showed the 3 silbergroschen transit fee was paid, an uncommon marking used only for about one year.

Realized: $160
