Africa, Postal History of African Liberation Wars, 1950-1990, collection of 28 covers and a 1995 mortgage bond, interesting group written up with background information on the political and historical nature of each cover/section, starts off with a 1902 cover from Swakopmund to Windheok as a forerunner of the German colony, 1950 South West African Native Labour Assoc. (SAWNLA) corner card cover which began in 1943 to recruit Ovambo laborers from northern Namibia to work in diamond mines in the south, 1953 cover posted from the headquarters of the 70th East Africa Infantry Brigade at Nyeri, in the central highlands of Kenya, a British Army counter-insurgency unite that waged war against the Mau Mau, 1961 French military cover from Algeria to France during the height of the anti-colonial insurrection led by the National Liberation Front, 1970 cover from Essexvale, Rhodesia to Luanshya in neighboring Zambia marked postage due because the Rhodesian stamp was not recognized, three Rhodesian military uses with official handstamps, highlight of collection is 1976 air letter to a South African infantry rifleman in the war zone from his mother at Johannesburg with bilingual boxed "VERNITIG SODRA GELEES / DESTROY AFTER READING" is an early relic of the border war, etc., a wonderful collection with insightful write-ups worthy of further study and development into an award-winning exhibit.

Africa was an early waystation for navigators during the Age of Exploration, and for more than 500 years suffered the gruesome consequences of conquest, colonization, and the Atlantic slave trade. Europeans initially settled along the coastal areas, and gradually advanced into the interior.
