In 1866, Wells Fargo withdrew from the John Day Mine area by canceling their The Dalles to Canyon City express run. Their agent at The Dalles, A.J. Buchanan purchased the rights from Wells Fargo. He ran his express over the same route for about a year and cased operation in late 1867.
