1911, 2¢ Black on Card, Portrait Facing Left Die Essay, rejected typographed die essay with portrait facing left (Misc. Die No.7731) on 75 x 86½mm semi-glazed white cardstock, pencil "Essay", blue-black manuscript "Die 7731. Sept. 6, 1910" on lower portion of front, reverse with BEP blue "439413" handstamp; light crease, otherwise Very Fine. Scott No. UX25E.
USPCC No. S35E-Ab    $2,000.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THIS REJECTED DIE ESSAY WITH PORTRAIT FACING LEFT FOR THE 1911 2¢ GRANT POSTAL CARD ISSUE.

This design was rejected because a portrait of Grant as a young General was preferred by postal officials. The vignette was engraved by Marcus W. Baldwin and the frame, lettering and numerals engraved by Edward E. Myers.
