(Retaliatory Rates) 1848 (Jul. 11) New-Castle-on-Tyne, England to Boston, Mass., datelined folded letter with blue "Newcastle-on-Tyne, JY 11, 1848" cds, bold red "Detained for Postage" framed handstamp and matching "Returned for Postage" framed backstamp, red manuscript "postage not paid" at left, Liverpool (7.13) backstamps, red London "Paid" (8.31) transit cds and manuscript "1/-" transatlantic packet rating, Liverpool (9.1) transit and framed "NOT PAID" handstamp, carried by Cunard Line Europa from Liverpool Sep. 2nd to New York arriving Sep. 14th, New York blue manuscript "29" cent retaliatory due rating for 24¢ packet fee plus 5¢ inland postage, Very Fine and unusual held for postage use during the retaliatory period.
