(Waterway) Passenger Packet Steamer New Uncle Sam, overall illustration in blue showing Steamboat, on cover to Philadelphia, Pa. franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by "Memphis, Ten., Dec 12" cds, 1860 docketing alongside; stamp and cover edge flaws, F.-V.F., a very rare design, the listing illustration in Milgram. Scott No. 26.

The "New Uncle Sam", built in 1857, was purchased by the Navy in November of 1862 and was commissioned the following month. Her name was soon changed to the USS Black Hawk and was employed as the Mississippi squadron flagship.
