(Carrier Fee) Philadelphia Pa. Apr. 22, 1861, octagonal datestamp ties 1¢ blue, type IIIa (22), plate 11, B relief, used with 5¢ brown (29), both tied by grid cancels and "Philadelphia Br. Pkt. Apr 22" exchange office cds on blue tissue cover to Spezia, Sardinia, carried by Cunard Line Persia from New York Apr. 25th to Queenstown arriving May 4th, Calais (5.6) transit and "GB/1F60c" Anglo-French accountancy boxed handstamp, manuscript "10" due marking, Very Fine, ex-Gibson, Neinken, Wagshal.
Estimate    $2,000 - 3,000.

THE ONLY RECORDED EXAMPLE OF THE 5¢ BRITISH OPEN MAIL RATE TO SPAIN WITH THE ADDITIONAL 1¢ CARRIER FEE PREPAID.

The 1¢ Type IIIa stamp pays the carrier fee and the 5¢ pays the British open mail rate. This cover was the subject of an article by Neinken and Starnes (Chronicle 124, pp. 276-277).
