(Carrier Fee) Philadelphia, Pa, Aug 16, 1861, octagonal datestamp on 3¢ red (U27) star die buff entire to Fort Pickens Fla. bearing 1¢ blue, type II (20), both cancelled by "OLD STAMPS / NOT RECOGNIZED" two-line handstamp, matching "Due 3" straightline; restored at right affecting indicia and the "P" of "Stamps", Very Fine appearance; with 2000 P.F. certificate.

Prepaid postage to the South was not accepted after the 1861 exchange period. In Philadelphia, the exchange period for postal stationery was August 8-14, 1861. After this period, prior postal stationery issues would no longer be accepted for postage. Demonetization did not apply to the 1¢ carrier fee as shown by the usage here.
