1851, 3¢ orange brown, type II, horizontal strip of three, pos. 15-16-17L0, strong color with large to huge margins including frameline of stamps above except touched at bottom, each canceled by red circular grid, matching "U.s. Express Mail, N.y., N York, 19 Nov" route agent cds on blue folded letter to Boston, Mass.; file fold trough center stamp, otherwise Very Fine and rare use of orange brown strip to pay triple the 3¢ letter rate.
Scott No. 10A; $1,200 as off-cover strip    Estimate $500 - 750.

While pairs of the 3c Orange Brown on cover are sometimes encountered, strips of three or larger are rare. Another New York Express Mail cover from this same correspondence to Mess. Wm. Appleton with two #10A strips of three sold for $8,625 in the Wagshal sale 3.
