1895, 4¢ dark brown, diagonal bisects, two covers, one with top left diagonal half and other with bottom right diagonal half with full selvage at bottom, each tied across the cut by bold strike of "Wadham's Mills N.Y. Apr. 1 12PM 1898" cds, with second strikes at left, on cover to West New Brighton N.Y., each with manuscript "Out of 2's and 1's G.H.P." by postmaster at spot where rest of stamp would have been, Apr. 4th receiving backstamps, bottom half with original letter stating in part "I send you per this mail all the provisionals I can get or ever hope to get…", and with 2003 A.P.S. and 2008 P.F. certificates, Very Fine and exceptional matched pair of diagonal bisects, ex-Whitpain.

A RARE MATCHED PAIR OF 4¢ 1895 BUREAU ISSUE BISECTS DUE TO A SHORTAGE OF 1¢ OR 2¢ STAMPS AT WADLAM'S MILLS, ONLY FOUR IN TOTAL ARE RECORDED.

This matched pair of Wadham's Mills N.Y. bisect covers used on the same day were offered in the Whitpain collection realizing $2,645 each in 2009. All four covers have the matching notation by the postmaster noting the 1¢ and 2¢ stamp shortage.
