(Coastal Mail) "Via Delaware Canal & Hands Steam Propeller Line, endorsement on buff cover bearing 3¢ dull red (26) tied by "Philadelphia Pa., Jul 20, 1860" octagon datestamp to Washington D.C., endorsed "To be unloaded on Morgans Wharf, Washington D.C."; top edge nick, F.-V.F., Writer directives for mail to be carried by canal boat are quite unusual - as are covers identifiably carried on them.

The Delaware Canal was completed in 1832. It connected Bristol Pa. with Easton PA. The purpose of the canal was to provide a way to transport anthracite coal from northeastern Pennsylvania to cities on the eastern seaboard via the Lehigh Canal.
