[Alaska Terr.] Fort Kodiak forwarded cover, 1869, hotel corner card cover addressed to soldier at Alcatraz Island, San Francisco, franked with 1867 3¢ rose, F. grill tied by "Cleveland, O., Aug 15" cds and cork duplex, addressed crossed out and manuscript "Kodiak, Alaska Territory, Russia America" forwarding, "San Francisco, Cal, Aug 22" cds at top, with original enclosure docketed "i receift this letter on the 8th day of April 1869 at Fort Kodiak, Alaska Ter", cover with slightly rough reduction at left, Fine, a very rare and early usage to Kodiak, Alaska and the only known letter addressed to Russia America. Scott No. 94; Estimate $750-1,000. Maj. Gen. Halleck, in command of the military pacific division, sent the CY G 2nd U.S. Artillery unit to establish Fort Kodiak in 1868. The fort was abandoned in 1870. |
