WESTPEX AUCTIONS

The Hugh V. Feldman Collection of United States Waterways

Sale 57 Catalog

Sale 57, The Hugh V. Feldman Collection of United States Waterways, was a specialized auction offered in a separate hardbound catalog showcasing this International Large Gold collection. This outstanding collection was one of the finest of this difficult area and was featured in Hugh’s book U.S. Contract Mail Routes by Water 1824-1875, which was also awarded Large Gold in competition. Starring on the front cover of the catalog was the Steamer Telegraph No. 2 cover bearing an 1851, 3¢ red Scott #11A with vivid red markings and tremendous eye appeal that realized $32,200 verses a presale estimate of $3,000. This is the highest price ever achieved for a United States steamboat cover and demonstrates the strength of the postal history items in choice condition. Another example was lot 4058, the Steamer St. Nicholas cover with an illustrated packet handstamp showing a cotton bale realized $9,200 against a presale estimate of $5,000. This Alabama River steamboat marking is one of the prettiest designs produced.

Prices quoted include buyer’s premium and taxes.
