Via Nicaragua, Ahead of the Mails, two line handstamp in black on cover to Philadelphia, Pa. franked with 1851, 3¢ dull red, horizontal pair (11A), carried from San Francisco and entered the mails with "New York, Ship, Feb 4" cds tying pair; couple cover creases one affecting right stamp and ink spot at bottom, Very Fine appearance, an extremely rare "Via Nicaragua" marking in black.Estimate $400 - 600.
Virtually all of these markings are found in red. Only a few markings are known in blue or black.
