(Sodus Point & Southern Railroad) S.P. & S.R., Wallington, Aug 17 18, blue fancy framed station postmark ties 3¢ green (158) on cover to Newcomb, Essex County, N.Y., Very Fine and rare fancy framed railroad station, Rarity VII; This is the discovery copy illustrated in Towle's "Route Agent Postmarks Supplement"..

The Sodus Point & Southern Rail Road Company was incorporated on March 19th 1852. The 34 mile line from the coal piers at Sodus Point was not completed until 1873 when it was contracted for Route 1285 at $1,700 a year for a daily service excluding Sundays.

Put into the post at Wallington Station located 4 miles south of Sodus Point. Put onto Route 1285 and transferred onto Route 1213 for Syracuse and eastward to Troy.

Envelope put onto Route 2 and carried south to Augusta for transfer 10½ miles west to Winthrop.

From Boston sorted at Troy and put onto Route 348 for the 66 miles north to Darby.

Ms., Dec 15, bold strike of route agent's cds ties 10¢ green (68), couple perfs torn away at bottom right, on small 1868 cover to "United States Ship Dacotah, South Pacific Squadron, Care of United States Consul, Panama", docketed at left "Callao, Peru, Jan 1st 1869", additionally tied by black "New York Dec 16" exchange postmark, Very Fine and attractive.

A RARE USAGE OF A RAILROAD COVER FRANKED WITH 10¢ 1861 ISSUE, THE FEW KNOWN 10¢ COVERS ARE TYPICALLY USED TO CANADA OR THE WEST COAST.

USS "Dacotah" was commissioned in 1859 was a large 1,012 tons steam sloop that served the United States Navy in the Atlantic Ocean as well as in Pacific Ocean. When the American Civil War occurred, "Dacotah" assumed the role of a gunboat in the Union blockade of the Confederate States of America. When the war was over, "Dacotah", who was named for the American Dakota tribe, resumed her role protecting American interests worldwide by showing her presence in both the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans.
