Fiske & Co's Express, United States & Canada, black on vermilion label, used on 3¢ red (U10) buff Nesbitt entire endorsed "By coach from Fitchburg" to Lunenburg Mass., endorsed "by Xpress" and "Mar. 1. 1855"; label oxidized, a Very Fine use.

Lot 1117    

Fiske & Co's Express, United States & Canada, black on green label, used on cover to Boston Mass., endorsed "Express", pencil "Valuable" money letter and "Paid Otis" (agent) endorsements; top edge tear and reduced at right, Very Fine.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Fiske and Rice became Fiske & Co. in about 1853. In 1855 Fiske & Co. and Cheney & Co. merged to form United States and Canada Express.

Fiske & Rice's Express, small black on orange Glazed label used on cover to Troy N.H., manuscript "By Express" and "$11.73" money letter endorsements, Fine, ex-Mason, Golden; signed Sloane.
Estimate    $400 - 600.

Scott's Specialized Catalog once listed this as a stamp in the locals section. They now consider it a label and do not list it. I consider it an undenominated "stabel" used to prepay inter-city express charges.

Fiske & Rice's Express, black on yellow glazed label with train vignette, slightly oxidized, used on blue August 5th 1853 folded letter from Brattleboro Vt. to Boston, Mass., endorsed "Fiske & Rice Exp, R Road Service, from J.G.", Very Fine and scarce Vermont Express label use.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Gunn, Agent, black on vermilion label, used on 3¢ red (U9) Nesbitt entire to Boston Mass. street address, manuscript notation "Sickness", with circa 1856 original letter datelined Shelburne Falls Mass., Jul. 8, concerning a young child suffering from dysentery; small piece missing from backflap and opening tear across lower flap, otherwise Very Fine and very scarce.

This express operated via the railway between Boston and Newburyport. The handstamps are recorded only for 1844. Adhesives are recorded to 1854.

Forwarded by Gay & Co's Express, black on green express label, affixed on reverse of blue folded partial letter to New York City street address, manuscript "Paid" and pencil "2/" rating for 25¢ express fee, Boyd's 2¢ black on green (20L4), cut-to-shape and light crease, tied by red "Paid/J.T.B." two-line handstamp, matching "Boyd's City Express Post, Jun 29" oval datestamp, Very Fine.
Estimate    $1,000 - 1,500.

AN EXCEPTIONAL GAY & CO.'S EXPRESS LABEL CONJUNCTIVE USE WITH BOYD'S CITY EXPRESS.

James Gray began his express in 1842, running by train between Boston and New York via Fall River, Massachusetts. This was an unusual conjunctive use between a railroad parcel express and a local post.
