Hawaii, 1853, 13¢ dark red, thick white paper, margins large to just touching frameline at lower left, rich color, tied by red "Honolulu, U. S. Postage Paid, Dec 6" cds on orange buff cover to Athens, Tenn., in combination with U.S. 1851, 12¢ black (17), margins ample to just into outer frameline, tied by neat "San Francisco, Cal., Jan 5" cds, Very Fine; with 2016 P.F. certificate.

A EARLY THIRD TREATY PERIOD MIXED FRANKING WITH HAWAIIAN 1853 13¢ KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE OVERPAYING THE NEW 5¢ RATE AFTER THE APRIL 1855 RATE CHANGE.

This letter was carried on the American brig "Agate", leaving Honolulu on the 10th of December and arriving in San Francisco on December 27, 1855. It was then sent for the east coast and postmarked on January 5th.

Hawaii, 1853, 13¢ dark red, thick white paper, margins large to just into frameline at left, canceled by circular cross hatch grid handstamp (Gregory unlisted) on 1854 cover addressed to to Mr. William Lord in Hillingworth Conn., red "Honolulu, U.S. Postage Paid, Oct 3" origin cds alongside, San Francisco, Cal., Nov 1 cds and matching "Paid, Ship, 8" rate handstamp; cover with slight edge wear and minor soiling, F.-V.F., ex-Tows, Jessup, Krug, Rust, Pietsch & Golden; with 1960 Friedl, 1987 and 2011 P.F. certificates.

ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED SOLO USAGES OF THE 1853 13¢ KAMEHAMEHA III ISSUE PAYING THE SHORT LIVED 13¢ RATE PRIOR TO THE APRIL 1855 RATE CHANGE.

Carried aboard on the schooner "E. L. Frost" which left Honolulu on October 4th 1854 and arrived in San Francisco on October 28th. It was then sent via Panama aboard the "John L. Stephens" which departed on November 1st. (Gregory census no. 13-8).
