Hawaii, 1859, 2¢ dark blue on grayish white, plate 3-B, type VIII, position 8, full margins to just clear, tied by red "Honolulu, Hawaiian-Islands, Aug 17" cds on cover to Mrs. Maria J. Forbes at Kaluaaha, Molokai; faint overall soiling not mentioned on accompanying certificate, cover with sealed diagonal tear at top center, a Very Fine and rare use with a sound stamp; with 2009 P.F. certificate.

The distinctive 2¢ Dark Blue on Grayish White Numeral issue is much rare used on cover than the 2¢ Light Blue on Bluish Numeral, but both catalog the same $12,500 on cover.

ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 1859 2¢ DARK BLUE HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ISSUE WITH THE COMMA AFTER "CENTS" VARIETY.

The five recorded 2¢ blue Numeral stamps with the Comma after "Cents" variety:

1) Dark Blue, Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Position 2), tear at right, two holes repaired, ex-Honolulu Advertiser.
2) Dark Blue, Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Position 2), on cover from Hilo to Honolulu, ex Honolulu Advertiser, Gross.
3) Dark Blue, Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Postion 2), pen cancel, ex-Crocker, Pietsch, Steiner, the example offered here.
4) Light Blue, Plate 3-A, Type I (Westerberg Position 3), red Honolulu cds, ex-Ishikawa, Golden.

Hawaii, 1862, 2¢ black on greenish blue, plate 3-Gx, type X, position 10, three clear to large margins, in at bottom right, tied by greenish-blue "Lahaina, Hawaiian-Islands, Dec 19" cds on circa 1862 small cover to Rev. Sereno Bishop at Hana, East Maui; reduced from opening at left, the cover is repaired at left but the stamp is sound except for a small tear and crease, F.-V.F. appearance, ex-Admiral Harris, Ostheimer, Honolulu Advertiser and Twigg-Smith; with 2007 P.F. certificate.

THE 1862 2¢ NUMERAL ON GREENISH BLUE PAPER IS EXCEEDINGLY RARE ON COVER.

The numeral is slightly battered as with all Type X stamps from this plate.

Cus., Honolulu, Oahu"; reduced slightly at right, Very Fine, ex-Admiral Harris, Van Dyke, David Golden; with 2011 P.F. certificate.

AN EXTREMELY RARE FULL COVER BEARING THE 1862 2¢ NUMERAL ON GREENISH BLUE PAPER.

Warren Goodale (1826-1897) was a nephew of Hawaiian missionary Lucy Goodale Thurston and settled in the Kingdom of Hawaii in 1847 where he worked as a land surveyor and teacher at the Royal School. He was appointed marshal and collector-general of customs by Kamehameha III. During the American Civil War, he enlisted in the Union Army where he eventually achieved the rank of lieutenant general with the 114th United States Colored Infantry. After leaving the army, Goodale returned to Honolulu, Hawaii where he served as manager of several sugar plantations. He also was appointed as head of the Hawaiian Mission Children's Society and was very active in the Historical Society of Honolulu.
