Jan 1" cds on 1857 orange buff cover to Schlitz, Germany, "U.S. Pkt." straightline, carried on the Collins Line Ericsson from New York Jan. 17th to Liverpool arriving Feb. 1st, red London (2.2) transit backstamp, "Per England und Aachen 3/2" double-circle backstamp, Frankfurt (2.5) backstamp and blue manuscript accounting, Extremely Fine and unusual use overpaying the 21¢ British Open Mail rate to Germany by American Packet, ex-White (1937 Doane sale), Knapp, Gross; with 2019 P.F. certificate.

Sep 23" cds on 1856 folded cover from the Hargous correspondence to Vera Cruz, Mexico, bold "4" reales due handstamp, fresh and Very Fine, ex-Caspary.

A CHOICE COVER WITH A 10¢ 1855 IMPERFORATE STRIP OF FOUR PAYING FOUR-TIMES THE 10¢ RATE TO MEXICO, WHICH IS PARTICULARLY RARE IN COMBINATION WITH THE RARE 10¢ TYPE IV.

Position 64L1 is the only position on the plate with recut at both top and bottom.

1851, 12¢ gray black, large margins to barely in at top, used with two 10¢ green (15) singles, mostly full margins, rich color, each tied by red segmented cork cancel, matching "New Bedford Mass., Paid, Mar 3" cds on circa 1856 buff cover to Paita, Peru, addressed to Capt. William H. Almy, Bark Cape Horn Pigeon, New York large red "12" cent handstamp credit to G.B., Very Fine, ex-Ackerman, Emerson (his pencil "D.L." Deluxe notation on back), Haas, Grunin, Giamporcaro, Hackmey, Gross; with 1988 and 1999 P.F. certificates.

ONE OF ONLY SIX RECORDED 1851 IMPERFORATE ISSUE COVERS TO PERU.

Cover prepaid the 22¢ rate comprising 10¢ American Packet plus 12¢ British packet from Panama. Captain William Howland Almy was the son of George and Phebe (Howland) Almy and husband of Almira (Brownell) Almy. He and his son, George H., were lost on a whaling voyage around Cape Horn in 1860 when their vessel was struck by a whale.
