A GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1¢ TYPE VA 1857 PERFORATED ISSUE POSSESSING OUTSTANDING CENTERING AND FACE-FREE CANCEL, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY THE P.S.E.

The type Va comes from Plate 5 only with almost complete ornaments at right side and no side scratches. 133 of the 200 positions on Plate 5 are Type Va designs. The SMQ Population Report does not give population figures for this major variety.

1857, 1¢ blue, type Va, horizontal pair with left straddle-pane centerline s.e., Positions 61-62R5, tied by "New Orleans La, Oct 18" cds on blue 1858 folded circular to Marseilles, France, stamps also tied by red Calais (11.9) entry cds and matching "15c" due handstamp; light cover creases including one that slightly affects right stamp, stamps some light toning, otherwise Very Fine scarce Type Va pair on circular to France paying the 2c printed matter rate, ex-White (Doane), Alexander, Wagshal, Middendorf; with 2011 P.F. certificate.

1857, 3¢ dull red, type III, tied by "Washington D.C., Aug 2" cds on beautiful handpainted "Remember! Ellsworth!!!" patriotic design (Walcott 400) on cover to Phillipsville Pa.; some scattered cover tone spots, Very Fine and attractive.

Elmer Ellsworth (1837-61) was a US Army officer and law clerk who was the first conspicuous casualty and the first Union officer to die in the Civil War. He was killed while removing a Confederate flag from the roof of the Marshall House Inn in Alexandria, Virginia. He was a close personal friend of Abraham Lincoln, who as President later eulogized him as "the greatest little man I ever met". After his death, Ellsworth's body lay in state at the White House.

Feb 13, 1859" cds on blue folded cover to Castillon, France, red "Boston 'Paid 6' Feb 26" cds, French (3.11) entry cds and oily red boxed "PD" handstamp, reverse with Paris (3.11) transit and Castillon (3.12) arrival cds, a Very Fine use; with 2021 P.F. certificate.

A REMARKABLE 5¢ INDIAN RED TYPE I PERFORATED STAMP IN OUTSTANDING CONDITION WITH AN INCREDIBLE DEPTH OF COLOR AND IMPRESSION.

Oct 30, 1858" cds on blue folded cover to Barcelona, Spain, red "New-York, Br. Pkt., Jan 5" exchange cds also ties stamp, endorsed "Via England" top left, reverse with red London (1.17) transit and Barcelona (1.21) arrival cds, matching "4" and "Rs." reales handstamps for inland postage due, Very Fine, ex-Grunin; signed Ashbrook who notes "Singles of This Stamp on Cover are Very Rare", with 1988 and 2020 P.F. certificates.
