1856, 5¢ red brown, block of five originally a block of six but top right stamp was removed, ample margins to slightly in at right, rich color on brilliant paper, tied by five strikes of open grid cancel, matching bold "Pekin Ills. Jan 20" cds on circa 1857 cover to Berlin, Prussia, red "N.York Br. Pkt. '7 Paid' Jan 27" credit cds for Prussian Closed Mail, red "Aachen 13/2 Franco" framed transit, German (2.14) arrival backstamps; one stamp in block has small pinhole, a few other trivial faults, Fine appearance, ex-Gibson, Rohloff, Mayer, Hansen.

THE SECOND LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLE OF THE 5¢ 1856 ISSUE AND AN ICONIC ITEM OF UNITED STATES CLASSIC PHILATELY.

There are 11 recorded blocks of the 5¢ 1856 stamp, including two original-gum blocks (one in the Knight museum collection), five off-cover used blocks, and four blocks on cover. An intact block of six on cover is the largest recorded multiple, followed by the block of five offered here. When someone cut off the top right stamp of this block, it was a true act of philatelic vandalism.

1856, 5¢ red brown, originally a block of six subsequently reduced to a block of four, ample to large margins on two sides, touched or in on others, tied by "Wilmington Del. Sep 27" cds on 1856 buff cover to Schorndorf, Württemberg originally prepaid at the 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate, red "N. York Br. Pkt. 'Paid 7' Oct 1" exchange office c.d.s., carried by the Cunard Line steamer Asia that departed from New York on Oct. 1st to Liverpool arriving Oct. 13th, red boxed "Aachen Franco 15/10" transit, German backstamps including partial "Schorndorf 18 Oct 1856" receiver; the block at one time removed from the cover and then replaced in its original position, lower right stamp with small repaired surface fault, cover faulty with creasing and wear, Fine, ex-Gibson, Mayer.

Kayser & Co." merchant's oval, London red (3.30) transit backstamp and "GB/1F60C" accountancy handstamp, Calais (3.30) entry cds and matching "8" decimes due handstamp, Toulouse (4.2) arrival backstamp; horizontal file fold clear of stamp, Very Fine example of the "Three-Months" period of U.S.-French mails, rarely seen from a city other than New Orleans, ex-Perry Hansen; with 2004 P.F. certificate.

Apr 7" exchange backstamp and matching "5" due marking, partial Halifax (4.10) arrival backstamp; vertical file folds well away from stamp, Very Fine.

Jan 12" exchange cds, light strike of red French entry cds and manuscript "9" decimes due rating; partial flap; left 10¢ pair creased at top, right with top right corner crease, F.-V.F. and scarce franking for double the 20¢ American Packet rate to France.
