Navy Agency - Baltimore, blue straightline handstamp between bars struck vertically at left, with matching blue "Baltimore Md. Mar 15" cds and blue ms. "f" rating for "Free" on folded cover to A. O. Dayton, Fourth Auditor, Washington D.C., fresh and Very Fine, a lovely example of this rare navy forwarder's marking.

Dayton, Fourth Auditor of the Treasury Department, Washington D.C., Very Fine and scarce scarce naval forwarding handstamp.

Mar 5, 1880" cds on cover with purple "Department of State" imprint to New York City; small edge tear at top and stain, Mar. 6th receiving backstamp, reduced slightly at left, Fine.

State Dept., 1873, 6¢ bright green, tied by cork cancel duplexed with "Washington D.C. Feb 28" cds on cover with violet "Department of State" straightline handstamp to Hon. Charles Devens, Judge of the Supreme Court, Worcester Mass.; no flap, extra ink at left, F.-V.F.
Scott No. O60    $800.

Charles Devens Jr. (1820-1891) was an American lawyer, jurist and statesman. He also served as a general in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was a judge of the Massachusetts superior court, from 1867 to 1873, and was an associate justice of the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court from 1873 to 1877, and again from 1881 to 1891. From 1877 to 1881, he was Attorney General of the United States in the Cabinet of President Rutherford B. Hayes.
