25 values from this set were ordered by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing from the American Bank Note Co. to serve as samples. They were printed from the original Continental Bank Note Co. plates. Washington D.C. stamp dealer, Henry F. Colman, was able to obtain a set of imperforate panes of 50. He had 45 sets privately perforated, leaving the other five sets imperf.
