Carrier, 1851 (1¢) Franklin, three large margins, clear to just in at left, uncancelled and affixed to cover addressed to "A. B. Durand, President of the Academy, New York N.Y."; stamp with a vertical crease on right side of Franklin's head, no gum, Fine appearance, a rare unused example of the Franklin Carrier stamp; with 1977 and 2013 P.F. certificates stating the stamp is genuine but declining opinion as to whether it passed through the mails.

Letter is address to the famous engraver Asher B. Durand when he was president of the National Academy of Design from 1846 to 1861 and resided at 91 Amity St.

Carrier, 1851, 1¢ Eagle, complete pane of 50 including bottom imprint block of eight, o.g., never hinged, strong color, creases and right edge tear and creasing, nick out of left selvage and upper right corner split, small tear affects imprint selvage, F.-V.F. appearance.

From an article on the 1875 reprints written my "C.H.C." and published in the May 1875 issue of the
American Journal of Philately, comes the following, "On the 1861-9 issues of the reprints (as also on the Eagle) simple gum arabic seems to have been used…the 1847, 1857 and 1870 issues of the reprints are not gummed at all.
