California Penny Post Co., 1855, 5¢ blue, vertical strip of 3, full o.g., margins ample to slightly in at top and upper left, small flaws, due to thin fragile nature of the paper, including a couple reinforced nicks at sides and gum crease in top stamp slightly breaking paper, F.-V.F. appearance, these stamp may well be the only original gum examples known, ex-Lilly & Hall. Only three examples are recorded in the Frajola census. One used from New York with a 1855 10¢ issue and a Swarts local post issue. The other sent from Honolulu, Hawaii bearing a 5¢ Missionary issue.

It is interesting to note that this envelope is slightly larger than other covers of the period. This was done to make it easier for the sender to place a letter and regular cover into this cover as the directive indicates.

Hiram Frazer established Frazer & Co. in 1845 while he was a Cincinnati letter carrier. His Eagle design issues used between February 3rd of 1848 and June 30th of 1849 are considered to be carrier stamps.
