1847, 5¢ orange brown, four margins, deep rich color, cancelled by bold strike of blue "Paid" framed handstamp on 1847 folded letter to London, England, matching blue "Philada Pa '5 cts' Dec 30" cds, carried as endorsed by Cunard Line Hibernia departing Boston Jan. 2nd to Liverpool arriving Jan. 16th, red London (1.17) arrival backstamp and manuscript "1/-" shilling due rating; folded letter with some hinge reinforcement, Very Fine, ex-Gibson; with 2014 P.F. certificate.

1847, 5¢ brown orange, bright true color of this scarce shade, late impression, margins large to just shaving frameline at bottom, crease in left margin, canceled by magenta pen on 1851 folded letter sheet to Rendon, France, red "New York, Apr 8" cds and manuscript "Steamer Canada" endorsement, stamp tied by red boxed "Colonies &c. Art. 13" accountancy and black French transit & due handstamps, reverse with transit and receiving cds's, Very Fine, ex-Oakley & Wagshal; with 1992 P.F. certificate.

1847, 10¢ black, ample to large margins all around, sharp proof-like impression, tied by numerous criss-crossing pen strokes, neat red "Corning N.Y. Jul 1" cds on 1848 cover to Nantes, France, endorsed "Pr Steamer from N. York" at top, carried by Cunard Line Britannia from New York Jul. 5th to Liverpool arriving Jul. 19th, red London (7.20) transit backstamp matching red "COLONIES/&c ART. 13" Anglo-French accountancy handstamp, stamp also tied by orange-red "Angl. Boulogne 21 Juil. 48" entry cds, manuscript "18" decimes due rating, Nantes (7.22) arrival backstamp, with enclosure datelined "East Painted Post N.Y. June 30th 1848", Extremely Fine, ex-Hayes, Haas, Rose, Craveri, Hackmey, Gross.

ONE OF ONLY SIX RECORDED 10¢ 1847 ISSUE COVERS TO FRANCE.

The 10¢ 1847 issue prepays the domestic U.S. postage to the port of New York for over 300 miles. According to the France-England postal treaty of 1 June 1843, the English transit and sea postage was 10 decimes (equivalent to 20c U.S.) per 7.5 grams (0.2646 ounces) to be debited from England to France indicated by the red "Colonies &c. Art. 13" marking applied in London. The French inland rates, also set out in the 1843 treaty, varied according to distance.
