Lot 2111    

1852, 1¢ blue, type IV, two singles, used with 3¢ Orange Brown (10A), each cancelled by red San Francisco "9" cancellations, right 1¢ is tied, 3¢ additionally cancelled by manuscript since it appeared uncancelled, on circa 1851 buff wrapper to Northumberland N.Y., docketed "Placer Times" over top right edge; 3¢ tied by some wrinkling, minor edge wear, Very Fine and rare; with 2015 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 9    Estimate $1,500 - 2,000.

ONE OF ONLY TWO RECORDED STAMPED EXAMPLES OF THE PREPAID 5¢ PRINTED MATTER RATE FOR OVER 3,500 MILES FROM CALIFORNIA TO NORTHUMBERLAND N.Y.

The other recorded example of the stamp prepaid 5¢ rate was from the Cipolla collection, 1851 Dec. 19 from San Francisco Cal. to Providence R.I. bearing #9 pair and #11. This rate was only in effect for 15 months, from July 1, 1851 until September 30, 1852.

1851, 3¢ orange brown, type I, right margins vertical pair with part imprint (positions 50/60R5E) showing the absence of plate "No. 5" number during the early state of plate 5, o.g., margins large to just touching frameline, full wide sheet margin, rich vibrant color, small scissor cut at upper left in bottom stamp, otherwise Very Fine, a great and important 3¢ orange brown issue rarity, illustrated in T. Alexander article 3¢ 1851, Plate 5 Early (The Chronicle 104, page 256), ex-Piller & Chapin; with 2000 P.F. certificate.

1851, 3¢ orange brown, type I, showing large break in outer frameline at top right, ample to mostly large margins, rich color, tied by neat strike of blue "Troy & New York Steamboat" boxed handstamp on rebacked cover front to Troy, N.Y., matching "2cts." in circle due handstamp, Extremely Fine and choice, a truly striking Troy & New York Steamboat usage.
Scott No. 10    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

An almost identical full cover usage was recently sold in the 2021 G. Eubanks Collection sale by Siegel Auctions realizing $6,250 hammer with a tiny cut in the margin of the stamp.

1851, 3¢ orange brown, type II, four singles, positions 76-66-67-78R2E respectively, deep rich color, all virtually complete four margins, each canceled by central red grid and then black grid cancels on folded letter sheet to Buchannon Carroll & Co. in New Orleans, La., manuscript "Emperor" steamship endorsement and light red "Grand Gulf, La., Aug 18" cds at left; left stamp with light crease at top right, Very Fine, a rare usage of four 3¢ Orange Browns on cover canceled by two different color handstamps; with 2011 P.F. certificate.

Swift to Washington D.C., reverse with blue Tremont House hotel cameo corner card on backflap, Very Fine, ex-Grunin & Piller; with 1975 P.F. certificate and 1993 Dr. Amonette attest.
