New-York Ship, 7cts, Jan 16, on 3¢ Nesbitt entire originating from St. Thomas to Connecticut, on reverse manuscript "Forwarded by yr. Most obdt. Svts, H(enr)y Degetau & Loop, St. Thomas 3/1 '54" and scarce "Foreign Letter Office, St Thomas" oval, entire with manuscript "Due 4" on front to complete the rate, Very Fine and attractive.
Estimate    $500 - 750.

Merchants in St. Thomas maintained the Letter Office from 1846 to 1860. Mail was bagged and shipped by private packets to avoid high charges of inconvenient schedules.
