Magnus Music Letter Sheet, "The People to the President,", multi-colored design with letter on reverse, written to song "Tannenbaum, O Tannenbaum", also includes 2nd music letter sheet in blue (unattributed) "Pennsylvanians March to Battle", both with ageing and small flaws, penciled letters on back are difficult reading, Fine and one of the most desirable Lincoln designs.

"Original Thirteen" State Seals Wreath, intense multicolored design with Eagle, Flags & Shield at top, on cover to Milton, Mass. franked with 1857, 3¢ dull red tied by light Washington, D.C. cds, Upham imprint on reverse; stamp with tiny corner tear not mentioned in certificate, otherwise Very Fine, a striking design; with 1991 P.F. certificate.

Patriotic Forged Covers, 3 covers; includes genuine patriotic cover with 1857, 3¢ dull red + 1861 1¢ blue (26+63) tied by Philadelphia cds with "Old Stamps Not Recognized" and "Due 3" handstamp all forged, address faked (a classic "Fox" fake), also a genuine patriotic cover with genuine #WV8 tied by fake handstamp and forged red U.S. Sanitary Commission handstamp, and 1860, 3¢ pink entire with fake Stamford Soldier's Fair stamp and forged patriotic design.

"Review of the Army", multi-colored Magnus Letter Sheet datelined "Harpers Ferry, Sept 28th 1862", well written and easily readable account of The Battle of Antietam, as written by Peter King (Company E, 130th Penn. Vols.) to his wife Hannah, soldier whose company saw battle (he was left behind as a camp guard), letter sheet with aging and minor splitting along some folds, Very Fine, an exceptionally in depth accounting of horrors after the battle, a vivid and heart wrenching accounting, with transcript and other research.

"The War For The Union", multicolored Patriotic Banner, Liberty and Flag design on cover franked with 1861 3¢ rose (65) with centrally struck "Paid" straight line, matching "balloon" McIndoe's Falls, Vt. cds, light scuff somewhat affecting patriotic design in "the", small bit of reduction at left, Very Fine, Patriotic covers from Vt. are extremely elusive.

Lot 2549    

Washington Portrait with Eagle and Flags, red and blue patriotic design on circa 1862 cover with fancy "Soldiers Letter" shield handstamp, entered mails with "Louisville Ky. Dec 18" double-circle datestamp and "Due 3" in circle rating handstamp to Louisville Ky., reverse with partial "DETAINED FOR / POSTAGE" two-line handstamp, endorsed "Through the Politeness of Lieut. Col. Johnston, 31st Ky Vol. Infantry, U.S. Army"; some soiling and wear, reduced slightly at right, Fine and rare fancy Soldiers Letter handstamp.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

The large influx of soldier's letters sent by Union troops in Kentucky and Tennessee in 1862, into Louisville without proper endorsements caused that office to provide a "Soldiers Letter" handstamp to use on cover when their nature was obvious. Less than a half-dozen have been recorded used from Dec. 1862 to Feb. 1863. Only this cover has the "Detained For/Postage" two-line backstamp.
