(Kern) Tehachipa, Cal., Jun 2 1873, bold cds postmark (KER-4100) with cork handstamp canceling on 3¢ green entire to San Francisco; slightly oily cancel stain and some manuscript ink smear, F.-V.F., the only example recorded and earliest known; with 2009 A.P.S. certificate.

Lot 993    

(Kern) Tehichipa, Cal., Aug 19, 1879, clear purple cds (KER-4110) on cover to Voiteur, France, franked with 6¢ Banknote tied by target handstamp, transit and receiving postmarks; stamp with a couple short perfs, a Very Fine and choice strike, a short-lived postmark known from March to August of 1879, this being the latest recorded.
Estimate    $200 - 300.

(Kern) Tehachipa, Cal., May 21st, 1881, manuscript postmark (KER-4120) on cover to Berkeley, Cal., franked with manuscript canceled 1¢ + 2¢ Banknotes; cover reduction at right a bit into 2¢ stamp, F.-V.F., a short period between Dec 24, 1880 and May 21, 1881, this town used a manuscript postmark between handstamp postmarks, this postmark with the "Tehachipa" spelling may be unique.

Lot 995    

(Kern) Tehichipi, Cal., Aug 14, 1884, clear strike of blue cds (KER-4130) on 2¢ red entire to San Francisco, with matching grid handstamp canceling, receiving backstamps; slightly reduced at right, Very Fine, the only recorded example of the "Tehichipi" town postmark and the latest recorded use from this town.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

During the first period the Tehachipi post office was opened (1869-85) the postal marking named changed four times. From Tehachipah, to Tehachipa, then Tehichipa and finally Tehichipi.

Lot 996    

(Kern) "Tejon Rancho", address on incoming cover from Baltimore, Md. franked with two 3¢ Banknote singles, reverse with "March 22, 1875" receiving docketing, Very Fine, this cover was received less than two weeks before the opening (April 2) of the Tejon post office.

(Kern) Tejon, Cal., May 19, 1876, clear full strike of cds (KER-4140, R5) on official post office business cover to the Postmaster at Santa Monica, franked with Official 1873, 3¢ Post Office (O49) tied by backdated cds, second strike with date crossed out; cover reduced at right into stamp margin, a Very Fine strike, the only known postmark from Tejon.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

(Kern) Unadilla, Cal., Dec 13 1897, clear cds postmark (KER-4200) and quartered cork duplex tying 2¢ carmine on cover to New York, Very Fine and choice, the earliest of only three known postmarks from this town, ex-Tatham (were it realized $700 hammer); with 2009 A.P.S. certificate.

(Kern) Weldon, Cal., Jun 27, cds (KER-4300) on 1870, 3¢ green entire to Oroville, matching target handstamp canceling, F.-V.F., Williams recorded this short-lived first type handstamp from August 28 to November 15 of 1873, this postmark of June 27th most likely is from 1873 making this the earliest postmark from Weldon.
Estimate    $150 - 200.

Lot 1001    

(Los Angeles) This article was rifled in robbery at Los, Angeles, California, Oct 8, 1925, manila label on uprated 2¢ red entire with German Consulate corner card, addressed to Berlin, Germany, with top portion of cover roughly torn off (rifled), with original Post Office ambulant penalty cover with same label addressed to German Consulate returning the corrupted correspondence, Very Fine and unusual.
