1851, 3¢ orange brown, type II, large margins to just clear at bottom right, deep rich color bordering on the scarce Copper Brown shade, cancelled bold "Paid" straight line and grid cancel, both centrally struck on cover to Wiscassett, Me., postmarked matching Lebanon, N.H. Nov. 7 cds, Extremely Fine; with 2008 P.F. certificate.

1851, 3¢ deep orange brown, type II, rich color, margins to barely in at top, tied on cover to Hartford, Conn. by red grid, matching "Northampton, Ms. Aug 19" cds, Very Fine, a nice example of this shade; with 2010 P.S.A.G. certificate (which was examined by Dr. Amonette).

1852, 3¢ dull red, type I, horiz. pair, margins to touching, tied by "San Francisco, Cal. 1 Nov." cds on cover to Wilmington, De. with nice strike of "Via Nicaragua Ahead of the Mails", in blue, Wilmington receiving back stamp, cover slightly refolded, Very Fine, a handsome example of this marking, ex-Haas; with 1972 P.F. certificate.

1852, 3¢ dull red, type I, large margins to just touching at bottom, tied by black grid on buff cover to Mobile, Ala. with red oval handstamp "From Steamer Cleona" (Mississippi & Red River Steamer), bold and well struck for this 51x35mm handstamp, postmarked red "New Orleans Aug 7" cds in red and black straight line "Steam", Very Fine and choice, a lovely Inland Waterway cover. 1852, 3¢ rose red, type I, tied by blue "Medina, C.H., Ohio, Jun 21" cds on cover with allover Phonography advertising design, with text extolling the virtues of phonography and Fowler and Wells imprint at bottom, Very Fine.

Sir Isaac Pitman was an Englishman who invented phonographic shorthand, or phonography, a shorthand system based on phonetics. As it could be adapted to a wide variety of languages, it became one of the most widely used systems in the world. It was his brother, Benn, who popularized phonography in America.

Mar 4" exchange cds, red London (3.17) transit backstamp and framed "GB/1F60c" accountancy handstamp, Calais (3.17) entry cds and "8" decimes due handstamp, Paris (3.18) arrival backstamp; left 3¢ nick at top, F.-V.F. and scarce use overpaying the 5¢ British Open Mail rate during the three-month period.

"Star of David" on small cover, 3rd is ornate orange corner card for Attorneys; etc., plus four margin single with extra line recut at right, Very Fine and attractive.

1852, 3¢ dull red, type I, margins mostly large to just touching at lower right, canceled by orange grid handstamp with matching "Butternuts, N.Y., Feb 6" cds on fresh cover to Copperstown, N.Y., with original 1856 enclosure; couple pieces out of backflaps, otherwise Extremely Fine, a very scarce orange cancellation, with Dr. Chase notes on reverse; with 2010 P.F. certificate.
