Lot 1377    

1856, 5¢ red brown, originally a block of six subsequently reduced to a block of four, ample to large margins on two sides, touched or in on others, tied by "Wilmington Del. Sep 27" cds on 1856 buff cover to Schorndorf, Württemberg originally prepaid at the 30¢ Prussian Closed Mail rate, red "N. York Br. Pkt. 'Paid 7' Oct 1" exchange office c.d.s., carried by the Cunard Line steamer Asia that departed from New York on Oct. 1st to Liverpool arriving Oct. 13th, red boxed "Aachen Franco 15/10" transit, German backstamps including partial "Schorndorf 18 Oct 1856" receiver; the block at one time removed from the cover and then replaced in its original position, lower right stamp with small repaired surface fault, cover faulty with creasing and wear, Fine, ex-Gibson, Mayer.

1856, 5¢ red brown, vertical strip of three, large margins to in, rich color, tied by two strikes of "New Orleans La., Jul 20, 1857" cds on blue cover to France, "Boston, Br. Pkt. 29 Jul" backstamp, red "Boston 'Paid 12' 29 Jul" exchange cds, French entry (8.11) cds and strip also tied by bold "P.D." framed handstamp, receiving backstamps; 5¢ strip with light margin creasing at right from edge placement, F.-V.F.

1856, 5¢ red brown, rich color and four attractive margins, tied on 1857 folded cover to France by New Orleans cds and black French double circle entry handstamp, boxed "G.B. 1F60C" accountancy handstamp, large "16" decimes, manuscript notation "Per Steamer via Liverpool", backstamped red G.B. crown circle transit and Paris receiver, Extremely Fine, a lovely cover in choice condition; signed Ashbrook, with 1994 P.F. & 1993 Rendon certificates.

Dec, 1856" cds on blue folded cover to Genoa, Italy, London (12.29) transit backstamp, Calais (12.30) transit cds, reverse with Paris (12.30) transit and red Genoa (1.2) arrival, manuscript "17" due rating, Very Fine; with 2010 P.S.A.G. certificate.

1856, 5¢ red brown, ample to large margins and deep radiant color, tied by "New Orleans, La., Oct 13" cds on 1856 folded letter to Bordeaux, France, red "New York, Br. Pkt., Oct 21" cds, bold "13" decimes due handstamp, reverse with red Liverpool transit and receiving postmarks, Very Fine and choice; with 1981 & 2006 P.F. certificates.

This is a late example of the "French Decree" rate. On January 1, 1857 the French due rate dropped from 13 decimes to 8 decimes (the so-called "Three Months" rate, which was in effect only until April first).

1855, 10¢ green, type I, Pos. 98LI, large and well balanced margins, rich color, tied on 1857 cross border cover to Canada by partial "Kenosha, Wisc. Oct. 5" C.d.s., bold red "United 6D States" oval exchange marking and Windsor split ring 10/6/57 receiving backstamp, trivial vertical file fold away from stamp, not detracting, Extremely Fine.

Aug 10" cds, numerous markings including red New York "Am. Packet" transit, manuscript red crayon "21", partial black French transit, manuscript "Per Steamer via Liverpool", backstamped red crown circle transit, Very Fine, a handsome cover.
