1857, 3¢ rose, type I, Plate 4, few perfs trimmed away at upper left, tied by cogwheel fancy cancel, matching sharp "San Francisco, Cal, Aug 18, 1863" double-circle datestamp with "6" cents due handstamp adjacent on gray cover to Flint, Michigan; some edge wear and minor stain, a Very Fine demonetized use; with 2010 P.F. certificate.

A UNIQUE SAN FRANCISCO COGWHEEL USE OF A DEMONETIZED 3¢ 1857 TYPE I ISSUE.

This cover was attempted to be prepaid 3¢ for the overland rate for under 3,000 miles to Michigan, but marked double deficiency due to the "old stamps not recognized" demonetized franking.

1857, 3¢ brownish carmine, type I, horizontal pair and single, deep color and all well centered, in combination with 1861, 1¢ blue, type II (20) on fresh cover to Downieville, Cal., all tied by "Paid" in circle handstamps with matching bold "Rome, N.Y., Jan 18, 1858" cds alongside; right 3¢ with margin flaws and cover missing most of backflap, otherwise Extremely Fine, a very attractive and scarce combination usage; with 2020 P.F. certificate.

1857, 3¢ dull red, type III, quadruple plate flaw, position 18L28, wide margins and rich color, tied by neat grid handstamp at top and not obscuring flaw in any way, on cover to North Haven, Ct. with matching Northampton, Ms., Sep 19, 1861 cds; trivial light cover soiling, still Very Fine, this being one of the finest known examples of this striking plate flaw.
