Eastern Rumelia & Southern Bulgaria, Collection, highly specialized collection and study housed on various pages with additional study material on stockpages in binders; starting with a section "Bilingual Town Cancels on 1881-84 Issues" showing cover and card usages of nearly all of the 32 towns from Abrachlare to Yamboli with many items rare to extremely rare (many are ex-Hitzler and with his certificates), also a study of Early Mail With All Cyrillic Town Cancels with rare to very items including usages from Bourgas & Clisoura, also a study issues starting with the 1880 "R.O." overprint issues including trial overprints with issued stamps on and off cover, multiples, inverted overprint, etc., 1881 issues including rare high value multiple, a rarities page with 1pi color error (black & olive), 20pa strip with 10pa error at center, Turkish 1pi strip with Eastern Rumelia 1pi at center, other item include specimens, large multiples, essay blocks, etc., Southern Bulgaria 1885 Lion overprints quite extensive including 5pa block of 12 showing red trial overprint on reverse, inverted overprints, specimens, large multiples (some being the largest known multiple) on cover items, various Lion overprint types, 5pi used on piece (only recorded on piece, no covers known), other trial overprints, excellent section of stationery starting with the 1880 Provisional cards and later formula card types including some very rare used, and much additional items including unique to extremely rare (some ex-P.T. Mexico, 1935 Amelia Earhart Solo Flight - Mexico City to New York City, registered flight cover addressed to New York City, with inscription and signature "Carried by air, Mexico D.F., New York, May 8, 1935, Amelia Earhart", franked with 1935, 20c Earhart Overprint and 1930, 40c Air Post Official tied by "Mexico, D.F., 2 May, 35" cds, in combination with U.S. 3¢ and 15¢ tied by ""Newark N.J., May 8"" duplex postmark, appropriate registry datestamps and labels on front and reverse (See website for images), Very Fine and choice; with 1992 E. Diena certificate. AAMC No. 1231 $10,000.

ONE OF THE MOST HIGHLY SOUGHT AFTER AMELIA EARHART SIGNED FLIGHT COVERS.

In 1935, famed aviatrix Amelia Earhart paid a goodwill visit to Mexico City, carrying mail bound for New York City on her return flight to Newark, New Jersey. In honor of her visit, Mexico issued an airmail stamp for mail carried on the return flight (Scott #C74), by overprinting its 1934-35 20c Lake "Eagle Man" airmail (Scott #C68a). 780 stamps were overprinted, of which 480 were additionally overprinted "Muestra" and sent to the Universal Postal Union for distribution to postal administrations worldwide. Only about 35 to 40 pieces where ever carried by Earhart to New York City

A LOVELY EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1914 5¢ COMPOUND PERFORATION VARIETY.

The large majority of the 5¢ compound perfs are defective and/or off center with perfs touching the design. This has decent centering and a minor fault, making it a premium example.

Lot 1437    

1923, 4¢ Martha Washington, vertical pair, imperf horizontally, top right corner margin block of eight containing one vertical pair of the variety, the block incurred damage during production and was subsequently repaired, with brown paper applied to the back at the Bureau, Very Fine appearance; with 1998 P.F. certificate.

ONE OF THE GREAT 20TH CENTURY ERRORS OF WHICH THIS AND ONE OTHER EXAMPLE ARE KNOWN TO EXIST.

The second example is similar to this item with the error in a block of nine. It too has a similar repair by the Post Office with brown paper tape. The block of nine was sold in 2009 for a hammer price of $11,500 (Siegel Sale 868B, Lot 727).

As per Gary Griffith's book "United States Stamps 1922-26", the brown paper on the back served as a typical repair method by the Bureau. Sheets of 400 or half-sheets of 200 that suffered damage during the perforating process were taped back together to salvage usable panes.

1898, 50¢ Trans-Miss., o.g., never hinged, choice centering amid nicely balanced margins, rich deep color, Extremely Fine and attractive, a very difficult never hinged Trans-Miss high value to obtain in such condition; with 1970, 2021 & 2023 P.F. certificates, the latter Graded (XF 90, SSV $6,000).
