Department, Dead Letter Office, Nov 9, 1855", large double oval date stamp and manuscript "$1" enclosed money notation and bold red P handstamp for recipient last name; partial backflap and tear at top edge affecting origin cds, otherwise Very Fine.Estimate $200 - 300.
In 1853, the DLO established new procedures for valuable dead letter. The handstamped "P" identified valuable enclosure ($1) and ledger where surname (Peterson) in DLO file November 9, 1853.
