Cahaba, Alabama Pictorial Steamboat (Alabama River Route 7003), red handstamp on incoming folded letter sheet with matching "5" rate handstamp, manuscript Isabella ship endorsement at bottom left; cover light cleaned and silk reinforced on reverse, F.-V.F. appearance, a rare example of this illustrated steamboat marking of Cahaba, Alabama.
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Contrary to regulations, the Cahaba postmaster used a pictorial handstamp of a steamboat in lieu of the mandated "Steam" or "Steamboat". Three varieties are known, of which this is the earliest type.

American Packet, Courier, Wm Bowne (Atlantic Ocean), red oval handstamp on May 28th 1819 folded letter datelined from London, carried by the Courier from Liverpool to New York arriving Jul. 8th, entered mails with red "New-York, Jul 8" cds and matching "Ship" handstamp and manuscript "20½" rating for 18½¢ inland plus 2¢ ship fee, F.-V.F. and scarce transatlantic ship marking, ex-Milgram.

From Red River Packet Creole (Mississippi and Red Rivers), oval handstamp on buff cover with "May 8th 1849" docketing at left and addressed to New Orleans La., partial "Paid" and "10" rating handstamps for the 328 miles from Alexandria; some minor edge wear, Very Fine, a rare packet boat marking.

The Creole under Capt. C.H. White operated the Alexandria to New Orleans trade on Route 6006.

Dr. Batey (Mississippi and Ouachita Rivers), red oval handstamp struck over manuscript endorsement on 1853, 3¢ Nesbitt entire (backflap seal) to New Orleans, La., canceled by straight line "Steam" handstamp, red "New Orleans, La., Apr 13" cds, unusually strong watermark paper; file fold, otherwise Very Fine.
Milgram No. 359    Estimate $200 - 300.

The "Dr. Batey" of 281 tons built at Louisville Ky. in 1850, operating management was under the control of the New Orleans Coast & Lafource Transportation Company. The Dr. Batey later became a Confederate Ironclad in 1861.
