1869, 1¢ buff, tied by rim of partial "San Francisco, Cal." cds, with quartered cork cancel tying 1869, 2¢ brown (113), originally mailed short paid with only 1¢ buff for the 2¢ local rate and "The Young Men's Christian Association, of San Francisco, find this letter in the Postoffice without a proper stamp, and prepay the postage to save it from the Dead Letter Office at Washington" good Samaritan label affixed on reverse; reduced slightly at left with small edge tear and opened for display, Very Fine.
Scott No. 112    Estimate $750 - 1,000.

It is interesting that the YMCA affixed a 2¢ brown as the letter was only short paid 1¢.

Lot 1041    

1869, 3¢ ultramarine, unusual late worn print, tied by green grid handstamp with matching "Limerick, Me., May 9" cds below on fresh cover to North Parsonsfield, Me.; trivial tiny cover tear at top and sealed backflap tears, Very Fine, one of the rarer green cancellation towns; with 2022 P.S.E. certificate.

1869, 6¢ ultramarine, tied by circular of wedges fancy cancel on cover to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil via London, England, red "Boston Paid Mar 15" foreign mail cds, carried by Guion Line Colorado from New York Mar. 16th to Queenstown arriving Mar. 27th, red London (3.28) arrival cds, sharp strike of red "B.F. Stevens, United States Despatch Agent, London, Mar 28 1870" oval handstamp and forwarded the letter to Rio de Janeiro the next day, most likely on the Royal Mail Steamship Company's Douro departing Southampton Apr. 9th to Rio de Janeiro arriving Apr. 30th, Commander Walker docketed May 11th receipt; couple small cover edge flaws, Very Fine and attractive.

Lot 1043    

1869, 10¢ yellow, tied by quartered cork handstamp on "U.S.S. Resaca" ship letter to Philadelphia, Pa., matching "San Francisco, Cal., Aug 24", with receiving backstamp and matching "Due 3" in circle handstamp on front; cover edge flaws and missing portion of backflap, Fine, a rare ship letter usage from Naval ship in the southwestern Pacific; with 2008 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 116    Estimate $250 - 350.

The "U.S.S. Resaca" commenced a long Pacific cruise on May 16, 1869. Sailing westward, she passed through the Marquesas, Society Friendly, and Fiji Islands before reaching New Zealand. On the return voyage she called at Tahiti on June 15, 1870.
