1861 10¢ First Design

Lots 2297-2298

Lot 2297 o

1861, 10¢ dark green, First Design, very well centered especially for this notoriously off centered issue, magnificent rich and deep color characteristic of the First Design, bold red New York "Paid" foreign mail cancel, Extremely Fine; with 1998 P.F. certificate.
Scott No. 62B    $1,860.

A GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 10¢ DARK GREEN FIRST DESIGN, WHICH IS ONE OF THE MOST DIFFICULT ISSUES TO OBTAIN IN SUCH SUPERB CONDITION.

The 1861 10¢ First Design, produced from Plate 4, has very little spacing between the stamps for the 12-gauge perforation holes. It's rare to find instances of Scott 62B (or #58) with margins clear of the design on all sides. This stamp is a remarkable exception, especially noteworthy as a used example in flawless condition, and it features a gorgeous red cancel.
