Confederacy, Coosawhatchie (S.C.) Feb 13, manuscript postmark with "Due 5" on soldier's due cover to Col. A. P Calhoun, Pendleton, Anderson Dist., S.C., manuscript soldier's endorsement "Sent by Capt. J. C. Calhoun, 2nd Battalion Cav. S.C.V.", Very Fine.Estimate $100 - 150.
Captain John C. Calhoun enlisted on May 6, 1861 (by the Executive of S.C.), in Pickens District. His Battalion was consolidated into the 4th Rutledge Rifles in May 1862. In May 1862 he reenlisted for the duration of the war as Captain Co. C. He served throughout the war but was sickly for most of 1864 and returned to duty Nov. 24, 1864. He was listed as a deserter on Feb. 14, 1864 but was sick and sent to the General Hospital in Richmond and the hospital in Huguenot Springs, Va.

Smith, 2nd Prison Camp, Chase, Ohio", additional manuscript notation "Care of Capt. Wm. Hatch, Asst. Agt. for Exchange, Richmond Va.", postmarked "Old Point Comfort Va. Nov. 18" double circle and matching "Due 6" in circle, F.-V.F., a very rare and popular town with only three reported (Stets & Teal 6), one of the great South Carolina Postmark Rarities, signed Kimbrough.Estimate $750 - 1,000.
Evidence of a CSA stamp applied at upper right, which may have been applied later by a collector as the Confederate States of America postage was already paid as indicated by the "Paid 10" handstamp (somewhat obscured the the double circle postmark).
