Lot 2274

Confederacy, Five Mile, S.C., Paid, usual typeset letters in circular handstamp on adversity cover to Pickens C.H. made from typefounder's brass rule specimen book, S.C., no rating, with original enclosure datelined "Pendleton, Aug 16, 1862"; small corner stain, otherwise Very Fine (Stets & Teal Rarity 7).
Estimate    $300 - 400.

Dietz wrote regarding this cover…This is one of the most interesting objects I've seen in a long while. The envelope is made from a leaf of a printer's catalog of brass rule, and would suggest that the maker of this cover was a printer. The "Postmark" is a type set form, again indicating that he may have printed a number of these envelopes, which again in turn, suggests a Provisional.
